Fallon Health helps keep older adults moving in Worcester

Worcester, Mass., January 11, 2022— Fallon Health, a community-focused not-for-profit health care services organization today announced a new partnership with the City of Worcester to help fund fitness programing for older adults. The partnership includes a $200,000 commitment from Fallon to cover certified instructors’ fees over a 5-year period as well as a variety of exercise equipment.

“Fallon Health has been improving health and inspiring hope for 45 years,” said Richard Burke, President and CEO of Fallon Health. “With an emphasis on caring for older adults, we recognize the importance of programs that promote healthy aging. It is with great pride that we partner with the City of Worcester to provide five years of fitness at the Senior Center.”

“Fallon Health has long been a champion for the health and well-being of all residents in our city, especially for our older adults,” City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. said in a statement. “We appreciate their generosity and are thrilled to partner on such an important health initiative that will provide Worcester seniors with a steady stream of fitness programming for years to come.”

Programs that will be available between 2022 and 2027 include but are not limited to:

  • Strength training
  • Osteoporosis prevention
  • Dance
  • Tai Chi
  • Aerobics and Yoga
  • Walking
  • Balance and fall prevention

The fitness program is an extension of the larger Senior Center building upgrade project focused on modernization and making operations more sustainable. While designed to utilize various spaces, the central gathering point for these activities will be in a refurbished room on the second floor of the fitness center under construction at 128 Providence Street, Worcester. The Fallon Health Wellness Center—as it will be called—is expected to open in the Spring of 2022. A ribbon cutting ceremony is being planned for that time.

“Fitness programs that promote group exercise have long been a popular choice among seniors in our City,” said Amy Vogel Waters, Director of the Worcester Senior Center and Elder Affairs. “With support from Fallon Health, we are now able to accommodate the demand in a way that will encourage and inspire even more older adults to stay active in mind and body.”
