Richard Burke Inducted into Business Leader Hall of Fame

Worcester, Mass., April 22, 2022—
Fallon Health today announced its President and CEO, Richard Burke, has been inducted into the Worcester Business Journal’s Business Leader of the Year Hall of Fame for 2022. The annual award recognizes those who have made a lifetime of achievement in their careers, have shown sustained excellence in leadership at their organization, and positively impacted both the community and regional economy.

“Richard is highly respected, personally and professionally, among – and also beyond – the Central Mass. business and non-profit communities,” said Frederick M. Misilo, Jr., Chair of Fallon’s board of directors. “His wide-ranging intellect combined with his deep commitment to Fallon Health’s mission and genuine compassion for the communities the not-for-profit health care organization serves truly set him apart from other business leaders. Richard’s track record is a clear proof point of his credentials for this distinction.”

During his nearly 25 years with Fallon Health, including the last 7 as president and CEO, Burke has been instrumental in the not-for-profit health care services organization’s sustainable growth in an industry that has experienced one challenge after another. His understanding of, respect for, and influential role in Fallon’s storied history in government health care programs are the foundation for his leadership. Burke’s achievements with Fallon include:

  • Attaining historic membership growth as well as expansion in the products and services it provides. Additionally, the organization has experienced significant and unprecedented financial stability and growth.
  • Further establishing the not-for-profit health care services organization as an anchor business in downtown Worcester, providing good-paying jobs and top-notch benefits. Most of its 1,200-plus employees live in Worcester County.
  • Providing a robust and compassionate response around the COVID-19 pandemic including doubling down on the organization’s longstanding commitment to food insecurity and issues impacting older adults such as social isolation.

“Richard has strengthened the health, economy and philanthropic well-being of Central Massachusetts community, in ways that are unparalleled,” said Tim Murray, president and CEO of the Worcester Chamber of Commerce. “His vision, nimbleness, and understanding of the health care landscape has allowed Fallon Health to innovate and lead, while maintaining a focus on effectively and cost-efficiently delivering high quality services. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this lifetime achievement award.”

The award was formally presented to Burke on Thursday, April 21 during a special awards ceremony at the AC Marriott in Worcester.
