Fallon Health announces 13th Annual Canal Diggers Road Race

Road race to celebrate Worcester’s historic Canal District

Worcester, Mass., August 22, 2019 ― Fallon Health today announced its sponsorship of the 13th Annual Fallon Health Canal Diggers 5K Road Race on Saturday, September 7 at 11 a.m. The race celebrates the heritage of the region, and is named for the early Irish immigrants who dug the Blackstone Canal, connecting Worcester to Providence in the 1820s.

Open to all runners, joggers and walkers, the 5K starts and finishes at the Worcester Hibernian Cultural Centre, 19 Temple St., Worcester. All proceeds from the race will benefit local charities including the Worcester Hibernian Cultural Foundation and St. John’s Food Bank. Participants will enjoy Antonio’s pizza and snacks, Harpoon beer—courtesy of Harpoon Brewery—and live music by Joshua Tree following the race.

“We’re looking forward to seeing everyone lace up their sneakers at one of Fallon’s favorite events, the Canal Diggers 5K!” said Richard Burke, President and CEO of Fallon Health. “The race aligns with our mission, making our communities healthy, by providing a fun and active way for participants to celebrate Worcester’s history and exciting future. We’re proud to sponsor the annual event and can’t wait to see everyone on the course.”

The race is being led by honorary chairman Steve Genatossio, a Worcester businessman, and co-chairs Brendan Moran and Tammy Bailey, who have served on the Canal Diggers Road Race Committee since 2014.

“Incredible racers, spectators, volunteers and sponsors are the heart and soul of what makes the Canal Diggers 5K such a popular event each and every year,” said Bailey. “We thank everyone for their continued support, and we are excited to greet you along the beautiful course.”

In addition to Fallon Health, sponsors for the Canal Diggers Road Race include CSX, Worcester Railers, Winn Development, Sneakerama, Harpoon Brewery, Polar Beverages, Antonio’s Pizza, Table Talk Pies, The Hanover Insurance Group and Jenn Durkin LMT.
